The New Hampshire Biotechnology Council
aids the state with its long term goals in biotechnology education, business development, job creation,
and retention. The Council has provided information and assistance to biotechnology start-up companies
and other corporations interested in New Hampshire, and has worked with its education and industry
partners to promote continued growth of educational infrastructure throughout the region.
New Hampshire offers exceptional academic institutions throughout the state, some of which offer
research programs and assistance with technology transfer. At Dartmouth College in Hanover, Dartmouth Medical School is the nation’s fourth-oldest medical school, and offers
numerous programs and research centers such as the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the
Biomedical NMR Research Center.
Dartmouth also offers its Technology Transfer
Office (TTO), which patents and licenses inventions originating in Dartmouth College and its
professional schools, and also covers industrially sponsored research agreements, material transfer
agreements, and state business assistance programs. The University
of New Hampshire (UNH) in Durham is a land, sea, and space grant university offering strong
interdisciplinary research programs. Important research centers at UNH include the UNH Center for Freshwater Biology, Hubbard
Center for Genome Studies, the Agricultural
Experiment Station, Jackson
Estuarine Laboratory, and Shoals Marine
Laboratory, to name a few. The University of New Hampshire also provides the Office for Research Partnerships and Commercialization (ORPC), which develops and
manages the Intellectual Property of UNH, aims to build research partnerships resulting in
commercialization and economic development, and assists with technology transfer. Plymouth State University in Plymouth boasts the Boyd Science Center, which offers several resources for biological research,
including climate-controlled chambers for whole organism research, a 1,400 liter (370 gallon)
aquarium, human physiology lab, and other benefits. The New
Hampshire Community Technical College offers the New
Hampshire Biotechnology Education and Training Center, which provides hands-on biotechnology
education for students, faculty, and teachers.
